Power outages can happen for all sorts of reasons – from a summer monsoon storm (you know how those roll in!) to unexpected equipment issues, cyberattacks on infrastructure, or even a curious squirrel.
Being prepared makes all the difference when the lights go out. Here’s a quick checklist to help you stay ready:
- Emergency Kit: Have flashlights (and extra batteries!), a battery-powered radio, a first-aid kit, and enough water and non-perishable food for at least 72 hours.
- Charge Devices: Keep cell phones and other essential devices fully charged, especially when stormy weather is in the forecast. Consider a power bank!
- Know Your Utilities: Keep contact info for Arizona Public Service (APS) or your utility provider handy to report outages.
- Stay Informed: Monitor local weather alerts and news for updates during an outage. A hand-crank or solar-powered radio can be crucial if cell service is down.
- Generator Safety: If you use a generator, operate it outdoors in a well-ventilated area, far from windows and doors, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Don’t wait for the lights to go out to get ready.
