The Most Common Causes of Single-Vehicle Accidents and How to Avoid Them

There is no scarier experience as a driver than realizing that a crash is imminent. There are various types of car accident claims that arise on roadways around the United States, but single-vehicle accidents are among the most common. As opposed to multi-vehicle crashes, which involve numerous vehicles, single-vehicle accidents occur with just you. While they may seem less complicated from a legal and safety standpoint, they can still lead to serious issues in both regards. That’s why all drivers should do their best to avoid getting themselves into a single-vehicle accident by learning the most common causes of these wrecks.

1. Distracted Driving: The Silent Threat

As a driver, your focus always needs to be on the road. However, in the modern day, there are a myriad of distractions that can take your attention from the road. Whether that be texting, eating, adjusting the radio, or just talking to a passenger, distractions in general contribute to a significant number of single-vehicle accidents. Cell phone use in particular is a leading cause of distracted driving wrecks, even when you are the only person on the road. All it takes is removing your eyes from the road for one second, and you might just miss a turn, hit a speed bump going too quickly, or veer out of your lane.

To reduce the risk associated with distracted driving, try to keep your phone as far from reach as possible when behind the wheel. Always try to use hands-free devices and apps to reduce the overall number of distractions under the hood. From a general distraction standpoint, it’s easy to start thinking about other things behind the wheel when you’re bored. To that end, take breaks on long trips to keep yourself alert and focused.

2. Speeding: The Danger of Going Too Fast

It most likely will come as no surprise that speeding is a leading cause of single-vehicle accidents, particularly when weather conditions cause the road to be wet, icy, or generally slick. At high speeds and in poor conditions, it’s easy to lose control of your vehicle. This is especially true in emergency situations on the road that require a quick reaction time and, if you are distracted as mentioned above, the issue is only compounded.

To avoid getting into an accident via speeding, always stay within the speed limit and adjust that speed based on the weather around you. Slow down when you have limited visibility on the road rather than trying to speed up to beat the weather. Above all else, remember to maintain a safe following distance, ideally three car lengths, between yourself and another vehicle to provide adequate reaction time.

Weather Conditions: How Rain, Snow, and Fog Contribute to Accidents

As alluded to above, adverse weather conditions have a major effect on the frequency of accidents on roadways. Rain, snow, and fog are the three conditions most likely to cause issues when driving, particularly because they make roads slick and reduce visibility. Most people assume the danger comes from multi-vehicle crashes, but single-vehicle accidents caused by drivers losing traction or not seeing where they are going are quite common.

In most cases, the low visibility and slick roads combined lead to hydroplaning which causes a driver to crash off the side of the road. To avoid this, always drive just a little slower in poor weather and increase your following distance. Also, flip your fog lights on to improve visibility. It’s never a bad idea to check the weather forecast either before you get behind the wheel of a car just so you know what you’re heading into.

Drowsy Driving: A Hidden Danger

There are major risks that come from driving while fatigued as drowsiness can severely impair reaction times, concentration, and decision-making. In fact, studies have found that being awake for 20 hours straight then getting behind the wheel of a car is an equivalent impairment to a blood alcohol level of 0.08% which is the legal limit.

Never be afraid to slow things down in your journey a little bit by taking breaks every couple of hours to rest. Consider even switching drivers occasionally just to give another person the chance to rest up, even if it’s just a cat nap. Above all else, though, ensure that you get enough sleep the night before a long drive so that you don’t end up making a pivotal mistake on the road.

Mechanical Failures: The Risks of Poorly Maintained Vehicles

One often overlooked cause of single-vehicle accidents is a poorly maintained vehicle. Brake malfunctions, tire blowouts, and engine problems are all leading causes of single-vehicle accidents. However, regular vehicle maintenance can effectively prevent this by solving key issues under the hood before they devolve to the point of causing an accident. Neglect of your vehicle is the number one factor which may lead to a risk for your safety.

Always take part in regular vehicle inspections and maintenance, such as checking the tire pressure, brake systems, and fluid levels, and always be attentive to any “check” lights that pop up on your dashboard. When in doubt, check your owner’s manual to see what the recommended maintenance schedule for your vehicle is so that you can get your vehicle over to a professional as soon as possible. This will help to ensure any and all maintenance is taken care of promptly.

Stay safe on the road in all conditions

All of the above common causes of single-vehicle accidents are preventable for the most part with proper preparation and by taking precautions before getting behind the wheel. You should always practice safe driving techniques, maintain your vehicle, and be aware of conditions on the road to reduce the likelihood of getting injured. Everyone has a personal responsibility to other drivers on the road, regardless of conditions, so take action to be a better driver today so that you don’t accidentally endanger yourself or others on the road.
