The Brophy Prep Broncos Luke Weiskamp scored at the buzzer in overtime to get past the Prescott Badgers 70-68 in the first round of the Open Division game held in a raucous Badger Dome.
Uriah Tenette, the Badgers senior phenom, and states leading scorer, put on a show scoring 46 points that nearly put Prescott into the second round. Tenette said, “We did not come out like we wanted to. Started off slow and got behind. That is a good team and they got up on us early, but we battled back and had the lead but just could not get things to go our way in the end.”

Brophy took the lead right off the bat and held it throughout the first half. The Broncos biggest lead was 11 at 25-14 with five minutes left in the second quarter. After a timeout, the Badgers put together a 9-3 run to close out the half, when Josiah Peoples scored to trim the deficit to just five points.
Trailing 28-23 to begin the second half, the Badgers came out and clawed all the way back to take a 40-39 lead with less than thirty seconds remaining in the third quarter. Daylen Sharper, who led Brophy with 27, missed his first long jumper, but a second chance let him close out the quarter with a three pointer at the buzzer to give the Broncos a 42-40 lead.

The fourth quarter saw Brophy pull away to build a 57-48 lead with just over three minutes to play. Tenette took over, scoring 16 points in the quarter alone, making some incredible shots in the process. Zane Gaul blocked a pair of shot attempts down the stretch, collected his 19th double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Peoples rejected a shot attempt in the final seconds to keep the game tied as the Badgers came all the way back on a 12-3 run to send the game to overtime.
Prescott had a chance to win the game in regulation. Brophy had a shot clock violation and the Badgers got the ball with 3.2 seconds remaining, but under the Brophy basket. A length of the court pass went untouched and out of bounds giving the Broncos another chance to win. The shot attempt missed and we headed into overtime.

Once again Tenette did all he could, scoring all eight points in overtime for the Badgers. Brophy got the ball back with the game tied at 68 and when Sharper got double teamed, he found Weiskamp open under the basket, scoring the bucket as horn sounded.
Prescott coach Travis Stedman said, “Credit to Brophy. They made big shot after big shot. They answered everything we had. It was fitting it ended the way it did. I feel like we needed to be challenged because we have not been in the last couple of weeks and when you get a team like Brophy, you get challenged regardless of who they have on the squad. They are going to come get you.”
Broncos leading scorer Daylen Sharper said, “We just had to keep our heads down and trust each other. That is a really good team over there and we are just fortunate to get the win.”
Brophy Coach Matt Hooten said, “They are such a well coached disciplined team. I knew we were going to get a terrific game. There was a great crowd tonight and it was a great growth opportunity for our players playing in such a tough environment. This is my first time in this gym and it’s beautiful. Just thankful for this opportunity and hats off to them, and we will be rooting for them to hang a banner from the 4A tournament.”
#17 Brophy Prep earned the right to play the top team in Arizona on Friday. The Perry Pumas chewed up Dysart 70-29 in their first round game. Meanwhile, Prescott (20-6), who lost for the first time in 2025, will host a Division 4A first round game on Tuesday at 7pm. The opponent will be named on Saturday.
