The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension is pleased to announce the hiring of Michael Pierce as the new Assistant in Extension for Commercial Horticulture and Food Systems. In this role, Michael will work closely with Yavapai County’s farmers to provide research-based guidance, educational programming, and resources to support and strengthen agricultural operations in the region.
Cooperative Extension serves as a vital bridge between the University of Arizona’s research and the community, offering free and practical services to help food producers address challenges and achieve success. Michael will focus on engaging directly with local growers, identifying their needs, and providing solutions tailored to the unique agricultural conditions in Yavapai County.
“I’m thrilled to join the Cooperative Extension team and work with the dedicated farmers and ranchers in Yavapai County,” said Michael Pierce. “Agriculture is at the heart of our community, and I look forward to collaborating with local food producers to enhance their operations and ensure the continued vitality of our food systems.”
Michael brings a wealth of experience to his new role, including a strong background in agricultural education and hands-on work in sustainable food production. Previously, he served as the Director of Viticulture and Enology at Yavapai College, where he led the development of programs to support the wine industry. He is also an experienced winemaker and educator, with a deep commitment to helping farmers achieve their goals through innovative, practical solutions.
In his first months on the job, Michael plans to meet with stakeholders across Yavapai County to better understand the needs of local food producers. These conversations will guide the development of new programs and resources to address challenges such as crop management, water conservation, and market access.
Commercial agricultural producers are encouraged to reach out to Michael with questions, ideas, or to schedule a visit to their farm. He can be reached at mpierce8@arizona.edu or by phone at 928-782-5880.
