New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that the federal government will send a “a state-of-the-art drone detection system” to her state after a number of drone sightings across New York and New Jersey in recent days.
Although she did not elaborate on the system that will be deployed, it “will support state and federal law enforcement in their investigations,” she said in a statement on the morning of Dec. 15.
“I am grateful for the support, but we need more. Congress must pass a law that will give us the power to deal directly with the drones,” the governor wrote on social media platform X at about the same time. She urged Congress to pass the Counter-UAS Authority Security, Safety, and Reauthorization Act, which will give states “the authority and resources required to respond to circumstances like we face today.”
It’s not clear whether the federal government sent a similar system to New Jersey, where most of the drone sightings have occurred, or to other states. Over the weekend, swarms of drones were spotted in other states along the East Coast, including Maryland.
On Dec. 14, Hochul said that a drone sighting shut down Stewart International Airport, a small airport located in Orange County within the Hudson Valley.
“Last night, the runways at Stewart Airfield were shut down for approximately one hour due to drone activity in the airspace,” the governor said in a statement. “This has gone too far.”
Hochul then called on the federal government to provide assistance in dealing with the unmanned vehicles, adding that federal rules make it difficult for the state to deal with drones.
“Extending these powers to New York State and our peers is essential,” the governor also said. “Until those powers are granted to state and local officials, the Biden administration must step in by directing additional federal law enforcement to New York and the surrounding region to ensure the safety of our critical infrastructure and our people.”
Federal officials in the past week have stressed that there is no evidence the drones pose a security or public safety threat to the United States, while also asserting the drones are not being operated by a foreign adversary such as Iran or China.
On the morning of Dec. 15, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas suggested in an ABC News interview that the drones also were not flying around sensitive military sites.
Despite the assurances from federal officials, multiple elected officials have called on the government to shoot down the drones.
“Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge,” President-elect Donald Trump wrote on social media over the weekend. “I don’t think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down.”
Several lawmakers, including Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), have made similar suggestions. One Democrat, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), told reporters last week that the drones should be “shot down, if necessary.”
“We should be doing some very urgent intelligence analysis and take them out of the skies, especially if they’re flying over airports or military bases,” he said.

Jack, this whole drone thing is making me sicker and sicker with every day the passes. These things could be anything. We are told over and over again that there is no security risk and in the same breath they say they don’t know who is flying these drones. How can they be no threat if they don’t know what they are? I would hate for a nuclear attack to happen with the current government that we have. All of the officials who are suppose to keep our homeland safe are busy pointing fingers, it’s their job, no it their job. We have to talk about it in Congress, we will debate it in next weeks meeting and on and on. Give me a break, it has now become apparent that no one is running out Country. Biden is asleep at the wheel, Harris is off enjoying herself by her pool in California, the rest of the government are busy working from home which equals doing nothing, personally speak I am damn afraid! Russia, China or Iran could have attacked the United States last week and everyone is running around like chickens with their heads cut off or they are turning a blind eye on this drone thing. I can’t wait for January 20th when Donald Trump finally take control of America, but until then we are all in serious danger.
