Walker and Blue Hills mastication projects to begin December 1 on the Bradshaw Ranger District

Mechanical treatments will be used to thin approximately 1,800 acres on the Walker and Lynx Mastication Projects and 22 acres on the Blue Hills Prescribed Fireline Prep Project on the Bradshaw Ranger District. Contractors plan to begin work on these mastication projects on December 1.

No area or road closures are expected; however, we ask the public to avoid the project areas when equipment is operating.  Approaching such equipment is very dangerous as the operator may not see you.

Mechanical thinning has proven to be an effective restoration and management tool. Completion of this project will improve the health and resiliency of fire-adapted ecosystems while simultaneously restoring watersheds, rangelands, and wildlife habitat; and reducing hazardous fuels that pose a threat to life and property in the wildland-urban interface.

Project locations and acreage:

  •  Walker Mastication – 968 acres south of the Ranch Trail Head parking area and west of Walker Road
  • Lynx Mastication – 860 acres east of Walker Road and adjacent to and south of Lynx Lake
  • Blue Hills Prescribed Fire Line Mastication – 22 acres south of Old Black Canyon Highway, T 13 N, R 1 W, Sec 1
