Preventing Frozen Pipes – Town of Prescott Valley

Overnight temps will be low this weekend and through next week, which means it’s time to think about frozen pipes and how to prevent them!

If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, you should suspect a frozen pipe. Likely places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.

If you are concerned about your pipes freezing and would like to prevent the problem, here are a few tips:
• Open your cabinet doors to circulate warmer air around the plumbing
• Don’t set your home temperature below 55 degrees Fahrenheit
• Call a plumber to get your water system checked out and fully insulated.

If you are not able to get a plumber to address insulation issues, then leaving your faucet on at a trickle—and therefore keeping water moving slowly through the pipe—should prevent freezing of your water pipes. However, leaving your faucet running will lead to higher water bills, so consider this option ONLY if you have no other way to prevent your pipes from freezing.
