The Prescott National Forest (PNF) will be undertaking maintenance and improvement work on National Forest System Roads within the Granite Basin Recreation Area (the Area). Work is anticipated to begin November 11 and will continue for approximately four months. The work is urgently needed to address aging and eroding pavement, as well as drainage issues. The project will also include the construction of a new fee station. This station will replace the multiple fee tubes that currently exist at each individual day use site within the Area and will also provide an automated fee machine, which visitors may use to purchase day use passes with credit or debit cards rather than cash.
The contractor will use the Cayuse Trailhead for the staging of equipment for the duration of the project. The trailhead will be closed for approximately four months – from November 11 until winter weather forces the cessation of work.
Paving at the Wekuvde and Playa Day Use sites will also require temporary closure of these sites. However, only one site will be closed at a time. Wekuvde will be closed beginning November 11, until the work at that site is complete. The PNF will notify the public as further details about site closures become available.
The road will remain open for the duration of the project, though access will be reduced to one open lane at a time. Visitors should expect up to 30-minute delays.
