Monday, September 9, 2024, at approximately 11:05 a.m., Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) firefighters swiftly responded to and contained a small brush fire near exit 322 on East State Route 89A. The fire appears to have been ignited by melted plastic from a vehicle’s engine compartment, which fell onto the dry grass alongside the highway.
The driver immediately pulled over and called for help. After extinguishing the fire, firefighters spoke with the driver and confirmed that the vehicle’s engine compartment had cooled down. CAFMA commends the driver for their swift response in stopping and requesting assistance.
Despite recent monsoon rains, the region remains at risk for wildland fires. CAFMA urges community members to remain vigilant by maintaining their vehicles and regularly checking for any loose items, particularly on trailers, that could drag and cause sparks on the road.
Vehicle Safety Tips
- Regularly maintain your vehicle and make sure nothing is dragging underneath that could create sparks.
- Check and secure tow chains as dragging chains can generate sparks
- Check tire pressure before traveling–exposed rims can cause sparks
- Avoid parking in tall grass as the heat from a vehicle’s undercarriage can start a fire
- Keep a fire extinguisher secured in your vehicle and know how to use it
