The American casino industry was worth $67 billion in 2023, with Kansas accounting for almost $590 million. While this is some way off the $15.5 billion generated by Nevada, it is worth noting that there are only four casinos operating in Kansas.
At present, online casinos are still prohibited under Kansas law despite approving a bill that allowed online sports betting in the state. However, there are still well-known casino sites among Kansas players. Casino expert Karina Allan explains that while gambling companies are prohibited from setting up operations in the state, Sunflower State residents can legally access offshore betting sites.

The licensed casinos currently operating in Kansas are the Dodge City Boot Hill Casino and Resort, the Kansas Crossing Casino located in Pittsburg, Kansas City’s Hollywood Casino at the KS Speedway, and Mulvane’s Kansas Star Casino.
These casinos are showing excellent year-on-year growth this year with May’s figures showing an 11.03% improvement against May of 2023. Each casino enjoyed growth with the Hollywood Casino’s 16% increase being the largest and resulting in revenue totaling $14.49 million. Kansas Star Casino’s $14.02 million revenue was a 10.23% increase, while Boot Hill Casino saw a 4.64% increase with their total revenue at $4.06 million, and Kansas City Crossing took in $3.54 million which represented growth of 3.28% against May 2023’s numbers.
Kansas is not alone in prohibiting online casino operations, with only six states currently offering licensed operations. There are many reasons why states oppose online casino gambling including social reasons and opposition from land-based casino operators.
Casino operators will typically oppose any proposal that might impact their revenue, and many see online alternatives as a direct threat to retail operations.
Online betting sites have a number of advantages over land-based operations, including significantly lower overheads. Rising energy, maintenance, and staffing costs can all cut into profits, so operators are understandably concerned about sites that don’t have these problems.
Online casino sites and apps also offer players the opportunity to play as and when they want. No land-based casino can compete with this level of convenience, and they have to rely on the experience of betting in person as being a draw for their customers.
However, technological developments and lag-free connectivity have meant that online operators are now able to offer immersive gaming experiences that rival the real thing. The digital revolution has had a detrimental effect on many industries, with people choosing the convenience and ability to search for the best deals online.
Sign-up offers and loyalty programs are also helping online operators stand out from competitors in a competitive market. This can see consumers increase stakes or find enhanced odds while minimizing the risk of losses.
Many online betting operators also offer a variety of payment methods to suit all consumers. This includes traditional bank transfers and car payments, as well as online payment systems, and cryptocurrencies.
Crypto gambling has steadily grown in popularity as trust grows around cryptocurrencies. While it is still recognized as being a volatile industry, the biggest cryptocurrencies are now accepted by many major brands.
The popularity of online casinos in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New Jersey, Delaware, and West Virginia is shown through continuous year-on-year revenue growth. 2023’s figures saw a 22.9% increase against 2022’s, reaching a new record of $6.2 billion taken across these six states.
This will continue to grow as more states pass legislation to allow online casino operations, with rumors that New York could be the next picking up pace.
Despite fears that the online casino industry could cannibalize the land-based sector, studies have shown that the opposite is true. In the six states where online operations are permitted, all show growth in land-based casino operations.
This surprising news coupled with record-breaking revenues will help make the arguments for campaigners preparing bills across the country. States that have benefitted from online casino operation taxes and license fees have redistributed funds to local communities and to improve road and travel infrastructures.
As more states explore the possibility of legalizing online casino operations, more evidence will be gathered by legislators which could prove to be beneficial. With many American consumers accessing offshore betting sites anyway, new legislation could help states stem the flow of money leaving their borders, and also improve consumer safety.
A well-structured regulatory framework will create the conditions for businesses to thrive while offering support to communities and individuals by providing a safe betting environment.
