Quick Response by CAFMA Firefighters Extinguishes Lithium-Ion Battery Fire in Prescott Valley

On July 19, 2024, CAFMA firefighters swiftly responded to a structure fire in the area of Alwick Way and Sutton Trail in Prescott Valley. The fire, caused by a lithium-ion battery failure, ignited while the homeowner was charging a battery-powered scooter, similar to a Segway, in the garage.
After noticing the charger getting hot, the homeowner unplugged it, only to hear a pop about five minutes later. Upon investigating, fire was found in the garage.
Firefighters rapidly extinguished the fire, limiting damage. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported and the displaced homeowner was able to stay with family.
Remember to always monitor your battery-powered devices while charging and unplug them if they become unusually hot, are leaking, or you notice a change in shape, color, or odor. If safe to do so, immediately move the device away from anything that can catch fire and call 9-1-1.
