Suspect Arrested after Recklessly Firing Handgun Inside Apartment Complex – Prescott Police Dept.

On March 27, 2024, at approximately 5:55 P.M. Prescott Police officers responded to the apartment complex located at 3139 Willow Creek Road after a male subject called 911 requesting a police response and then hung up the phone. Upon call back, the caller, 52-year-old Kyle Kaufman, advised the call taker that two people had come into his apartment and tried to take his baby. Kaufman further advised that he had shot and killed both people.

Officers arrived on scene and attempted to make contact with Kaufman. Kaufman exited the front door of his apartment holding a handgun and refused to comply with the officer’s commands. Kaufman eventually went back inside the apartment against the officer’s orders. Officers were able to close the distance to the front door of the apartment. Kaufman came back out the front door of his apartment a second time again refusing to comply with the officer’s commands. As Kaufman attempted to retreat inside his apartment, officers were able to subdue him after a brief struggle.

Officers made entry into the apartment in search of the two possible victims as well as the infant. Officers did not locate anyone inside the apartment, however, did locate a .40 caliber handgun on the kitchen counter along with two fired .40 caliber casings on the kitchen floor. Additionally, officers observed two bullet holes in the walls of the apartment, one which led through a wall and into an adjoining apartment that was occupied by four people.

While officers were inside the apartment searching for the potential victims, they also observed a container with multiple clear plastic bags containing Psilocybin mushrooms, a known hallucinogen drug. Next to the container was a digital scale as well as a bottle of whiskey.

Kaufman was taken into custody and transported to Yavapai Regional Medical Center to be evaluated. It was found that he had preexisting injuries which required advanced medical care. Kaufman was transferred to a Phoenix area hospital where he is currently being treated.

The quick actions of our officers on scene led to the peaceful resolution to this incident. Thankfully, nobody was injured because of the reckless actions of the suspect. Pending Felony charges against Kaufman consist of Endangerment, Misconduct Involving weapons during a Drug Offense, and Possession of Dangerous Drugs for Sale.
