At approximately 10:30 am on Monday January 15th, a Prescott Fire Department paramedic engine crew was dispatched to a home in the Ho-Kay-Gan subdivision for a report of a 22 month old toddler experiencing a seizure. Upon arrival the crew began assessment of the child. A passive carbon monoxide detector affixed to the crew’s medical equipment began to alert the crew to the presence of the deadly gas.
The building was immediately evacuated. It was determined the child as well as all the occupants of the home were experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning. Unisource Energy Services was requested to the scene and was able to isolate the carbon monoxide leak to a faulty furnace. The home was not equipped with functioning carbon monoxide alarms. No additional injuries were reported, and all occupants are expected to make full recoveries.
The Prescott Fire Department would like to remind residents that the National Fire Protection Association recommends that all homes have at least one functioning carbon monoxide detector per floor. Additionally, all gas and wood heating appliances should be serviced and maintained once per year. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas that can be deadly.
