Bears Use Second Half To Overcome Badgers 21-13

The Bradshaw Mountain Bears came back from a 10-0 halftime deficit to beat the Prescott Badgers 21-13 in the annual rivalry game at Prescott High School.

Prescott won the coin flip, but deferred to the second half, so Bradshaw Mountain received the opening kickoff and Kylin Jackson took the ball to midfield. The Bears converted two fourth downs but failed to score thanks in part by a big sack of Bradshaw quarterback Bruce Normandin by Cooper Kasun.

The Prescott defense played a fantastic first half. The bend and not break Badgers shut out the Bears, despite being on the field the majority of the first two quarters. The Badgers went up 3-0 on a Jed Rummage 29 yard field goal. Prescott added a late second quarter touchdown when Jaxon Rice connected with Uriah Tenette on a 20 yard pass play.

Trailing 10-0, Bears Coach Bob Young made a switch at quarterback, electing to use Caden Martinez in the second half. The change proved to be a good move for the offense as they scored all three touchdowns in the final two quarters.

Martinez called his own number after faking a handoff up the middle to Ricketts, rolling to the near sideline for the 1 yard touchdown run, giving Bradshaw Mountain their first lead of the night when Trevor Head sent the kick through the uprights for a 14-13 lead with 9:56 remaining.

The Bears extended their lead with just under three minutes to play when Martinez connected with Kylin Jackson on a 21 yard touchdown pass for a 21-13 lead.

Down by still one score, the Badgers had one final drive left. Starting inside their twenty yard line, Prescott moved the ball down the field. A key reception on a fourth down play by Rummage kept the drive alive. Rummage caught another pass getting Prescott to the Bears 10 with thirty seconds remaining. The Bradshaw Mountain defense stood their ground, ending with a fourth down pass that fell incomplete.

Rummage, who hit two field goals, along with an extra point, said, “We left it all on the field tonight. We played hard every single play and I am proud of our team for effort tonight. Had a good chance at the end, but we just came up short.”

Offensively, the Badgers took to the air with quarterback Jaxon Rice going 19-36-0, 228 yards and a TD. On the ground, Uriah Tenette carried the ball four time for 43 yards. The junior also had six receptions for 48 yards and the only touchdown for Prescott. Rummage also caught six passes for 53 yards. Johann Gundermann pulled in five for 68 yards, and Josiah Peoples caught three for 70 yards.

Tenette said, “We fought hard and made some plays. Just did not make enough.  We felt good at halftime by shutting them out that first half, but they made the right adjustments and we just couldn’t get into the end zone. Tough loss, but we have to move onto next week.”

Defensively, with the Bears offense out on the field so much, Prescott picked up a lot of tackles in the contest. Led by Cort Lewis with 17 tackles, followed by Wyatt Rewerts 14, Uriah Tenette, and Adam Lloyd with 13 each, and Josiah Peoples with 10.

Prescott still leads the series 23-8, but Bradshaw Mountain has now won the last two.

The Badgers fall to (1-2) in the GCR and (3-5) overall. Prescott will travel to Flagstaff next Friday for a cold game versus Coconino. Bradshaw Mountain will host Flagstaff.
