Skunks are a common sight here in Prescott Valley [and everywhere else in Yavapai County] and these animals are mostly nocturnal by nature. Even though skunks are extremely cute and shy, having skunks around your home can present health and safety risks. Aside from being sprayed with their noxious musk, skunks are known carriers of rabies and other diseases that can be harmful to your family or pets. Skunks can spray their musk up to 10 feet. The smell can last for days and even weeks.
There are several things you can do to dissuade skunks from hanging around your property which include:
• Removing food sources such as pet food bowls and low-hanging bird feeders placing all trash in cans with tight-fitting lids.
• Removing piles of debris in your yard where skunks could hide.
• Using wire mesh to seal any openings around your home that skunks could use to enter crawlspaces, basements, or other areas.
Prescott Valley Animal Services personnel will not pick up or remove skunks due to the risk they carry to the domestic animals that officers place in their vehicles. There are several businesses in the area that offer skunk removal services. If there is a deceased skunk on the roadway that needs to be removed, please call the Prescott Valley Public Works Department at 928-759-3070 during normal business hours Monday to Friday.
If you, your pet, or a building needs to be deodorized, here is an easy and effective recipe: Mix 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup baking soda, and 1 tsp liquid soap (dish soap or another liquid detergent) in a bucket and wash the infected object, be it human, dog, cat, or a structure. Be careful to not get it in your or your pet’s eyes, nose, or mouth.
