The local chapter of Yavapai County’s Conservatives for a Constitutional Republic (ConCR) has announced that former State Representative Liz Harris (R-LD13) will speak at their upcoming meeting, Saturday, June 24th, in Chino Valley. The meeting is free and open to the public but seating is limited. Those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP.
Freshman legislator Liz Harris was regarded as one of the most conservative members of the Republican Caucus, when an ethics complaint was filed against her by Democrat Representative Stephanie Stahl Hamilton (D LD21) following a controversial presentation on election integrity before the House Elections Committee. Testimony by a witness sponsored by Rep Harris, implicated Governor Hobbs and other high ranking Republican officials in election fraud and accepting bribes from the Sinaloa drug cartel. Ms. Harris later conceded that this inflammatory testimony was unsupported by concrete evidence. The Ethics Committee issued a report finding that Rep. Harris had misled the Elections Committee regarding the character and scope of the testimony that would be presented but stopped short of calling for disciplinary action.
Nonetheless, House Speaker Ben Toma, who had been implicated in the testimony, introduced a resolution calling for her expulsion. The Chairman of the Ethics Committee, Joseph Chaplick (R LD3), declined to support this extreme form of discipline and voted “No” on the resolution. In the end, all House Democrats and eighteen Republicans voted to expel her. Thirteen Republicans, many of them among the more conservative members of the Republican caucus refused to support her expulsion. [Editor’s Note: Both LD1 Representatives, Selina Bliss and Quang Nguyen voted against Ms. Harris and supported her removal.]
In her talk Saturday morning, Rep. Harris will address what she regards as the political vendetta and lack of due process that led to her expulsion. She will discuss her firsthand experience with the political divisions and rancor that now grip the Republican caucus. This is Ms. Harris’s first public appearance in LD1 since her forced removal from office. Time permitting, she will stand for questions following her talk.
