Two-Vehicle Injury Collision Shuts Down SR 89 in Chino Valley – Chino Valley Police Department

On 05/11/2023 at approximately 5:40 pm, Chino Valley officers responded to reports of a two- vehicle collision that occurred at the intersection of Center Street and State Route 89.

When officers arrived, they found the collision involved a black 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer and a red 2013 Chevrolet Sonic. The driver of the Chevrolet Sonic, a 23-year-old female of Chino Valley, had to be extracted from the vehicle by Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA). She sustained serious injuries and was transported via helicopter to an area hospital for treatment. A 52-year-old male of Chino Valley was seated in the front passenger seat of the Chevrolet Sonic. He sustained serious injuries and was also transported via helicopter to an area hospital for treatment. At the last check, both were reportedly in stable, but critical condition. The occupants of the Chevrolet Trailblazer denied medical attention at the scene.

Traffic on State Route 89, between Road 1 North and Road 1 South was closed in both directions for approximately 1.5 hours and detours were provided.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the Chevrolet Trailblazer was travelling south on State Route 89 prior to the collision.  The Chevrolet Sonic was travelling east on Center Street and had a green light at State Route 89 to turn north. According to witnesses at the scene, the Chevrolet Trailblazer ran the red light at the intersection and struck the Chevrolet Sonic in the intersection. All vehicles involved sustained major damage and were towed from the scene.

At this time, the investigation is on-going and the identification of those involved will not be released.

The Chino Valley Police Department would like to thank motorists for their understanding and patience while the roadway was closed to all traffic for several minutes. We also want to thank our partnering agencies for their assistance, including the Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority, Lifeline Ambulance, Native Air, Arizona Department of Transportation, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, and Tri-City Towing.
