Lost Hiker Rescue at Watson Lake – Prescott Fire Department

Yesterday evening, Prescott Regional Communication Center received a 911 call regarding an individual lost at Watson Lake in the Dells with two pet dogs.  The individual was out hiking alone with her two dogs when it became dark, and they were unable to find their way.  With their phone on its last bit of charge and the cold and dark setting in, the individual made the right choice and decided to stay put and call 911.

Prescott Fire Department Engine 73, Engine 74, and Support 74 all responded to the incident to assist in locating the individual and assisting them to a safer location.  Upon arrival on scene, the Prescott Fire personnel made the decision to use a drone to search for and locate the individual.  The ability of the drone to expeditiously begin searching for the individual proved to be extremely valuable.  The Prescott drone operator was able to launch from the Watson Lake pavilion and fly across the lake.  After a short search the individual was located near the Peavine trail with her two dogs.  Engine 74 was able to hike in from the trailhead and locate the individual with assistance from the drone operator.  Once contact was made paramedics with Prescott Fire were able to evaluate the individual to ensure there was not a medical emergency.  The individual was then assisted back to her vehicle and reunited with family and friends without further incident.

Prescott Fire Dept., as well as Lifeline Ambulance, and YCSO officers assisted in the rescue.

The next several days have forecasted temperatures in the high 60s to high 70s with winds gusting up to 25mph and it is very important, when hiking, to expect the unexpected. Bring more water than you think you would need, a charged cell phone, clothes appropriate for the situation and snacks, if needed. If you plan on hiking near dusk, ensure you bring a flashlight as well.  If you do find yourself out of water or needing assistance, calling 911 is your best bet. It is also vitally important that once we make a determination of your exact location, you stay put in that area so the fire department personnel can make easier contact with you.  Kudos to this individual for recognizing their situation and doing just that.
