Sam Strasser, Brendan Costes and Jack Burton, combined for ten hits to lead the Prescott Badgers in a 10-3 Grand Canyon Region win over the visiting Mingus Marauders.

The flip side was Parker Reed tossing six innings, allowing just three runs on seven hits, including six strikeouts. Reed had a dominate second inning, striking out the side on the minimum nine pitches. The sophomore hurler said, “I thought I threw pretty good. I was able to get locked in and overcome some rough spots. The offense was great in giving me the needed run support.”

Mingus went up 1-0 on a first inning gift by the home team. Two Badgers collided on a shallow fly ball, which dropped. The Marauder, Landen Mcguirk hustled around from second to score.

The Badgers took the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the inning as Sam Strasser and Paul Fernow scored on two of Jack Burton’s five RBIs on the day. Burton said, “The ball was a like a beach ball today. We all came out to play today, got the hits when we need them.” As for the post game festivities in the stands Burton said, “Oh, I just asked my girlfriend to prom and she said yes.” No pressure there. Burton added, “Nope, none at all. Just making her feel special.”

The Badgers went up 5-1 when Luke Tobin singled in a pair. This after Strasser scored on a wild pitch, The Marauders scored for the final time in the top of the third, picking up a pair of runs on two balk calls. A pair of perfect bunts played a part in the rough inning, but Reed was able to minimize the damage to keep a 5-3 lead.

Burton again came through with another two RBI hit, this time a double down the left field line, increasing the lead to 7-3.

Three more Badgers runs came home in the fifth off of reliever Isaiah Godina. Paul Fernow singled and scored on a single by Strasser. Burton picked up a sacrifice RBI. Pinch runner Cooper Magnett scored after running for Costes who had singled. Tobin walked and scored, after Burton took off for second. His actions forced a late throw to second that got away. Burton went on to score the tenth and final run.

Strasser, was a perfect four for four on the day. The starting centerfielder scored twice from first base, said, “That is really tiring. I’m just trying to show off my speed. That’s my job. Love being the off man. We just need to keep this going.”

Coach Barry Tolli said, “I’m excited. We are playing our best baseball of the season right now and that is great. We are where we want to be, in a battle for the region title. Just have some really tough games ahead, two with Flagstaff and two with Bradshaw.”

The Badgers (7-1) in the GCR, and (12-6) overall, will travel to face Flagstaff today at 3:45 pm.
