Earlier this week, and just in time for Christmas, the Yavapai CASA for Kids Foundation wrapped up its annual Christmas drive and distributed more than $25,000 in toys and age-appropriate gifts to nearly 400 foster youth in the county.
“This organization has really blessed my family at a time when I thought Santa would not be coming to our house. This is a huge relief off my shoulders,” a kinship placement said while collecting gifts for the three children in her care.
For the last 16 years, Yavapai CASA for Kids has worked with local businesses and organizations to collect gifts for youth of all ages in foster care. This year, the foundation placed 75 boxes in businesses across the Tri-Cities. 70 organizations, such as Prescott Lakes; Yavapai College; Desert Financial; and Prescott Realty Executives, acted as collection sites. In three weeks, the community donated enough toys and gifts to fill the foundation’s staff and volunteer vehicles many times over.
“We doubled the number of donations and children we served this year!” said Missy Sikora, board chair of the Yavapai CASA for Kids Foundation. “These kiddos will not get just one gift, but will have their entire Christmas provided for.”
Gift distribution took place on Monday, December 19th and Tuesday, December 20th. Various foster agencies, DCS caseworkers, case aides, and kinship and foster placements were able to ensure that the youth in their care received multiple gifts.
“As a social worker, I think having a resource like this is extremely valuable for families, especially for those like the ones I’m picking up for today. The family is without a vehicle and lives in an extremely rural area, so I can help by bringing some things,” said Rachel Walters-Leach of Child and Family Support Services.
The Yavapai CASA for Kids Foundation expresses its deepest gratitude for the community’s support. Nearly 400 foster youth received gifts and not only that, there were gifts left over! These additional gifts went to families in need and several organizations supporting at-risk youth and low-income families in the area. To name a few, these organizations include Humboldt Unified School District’s Family Resource Center, Heights Church, and the Verde Valley CASA Support Council.
