The Deer Valley Skyhawks put together a big 27 point fourth quarter to hand the Prescott Badgers their first loss of the season, 73-61.  It was Prescott’s first loss in the Badger Dome in almost a year. This game was played before a smaller crowd on a cold snowy night in Prescott.

The Badgers started off slow, falling behind by six before a three point shot by Zane Gaul cut the deficit in half at 6-3, with five minutes left in the opening quarter. The Skyhawks lead grew to 11-4 before Uriah Tenette knocked down his first basket, as the Badgers trailed by five after eight minutes. Tenette’s first and only three pointer of the game came with 5:28 in the second quarter, giving Prescott their first lead at 20-18. The two teams exchanged leads for the remainder of the half with Deer Valley leading 30-28.

The second half started off great for the home team. Zane Gaul and Andrew Lyon each knocked down a three pointer that sparked a 10-0 run to start the second half, building a 38-30 Badger lead. A timeout by Deer Valley settled things down for the Skyhawks, as they took advantage of poor shot selection and turnovers to come back and take a 46-45 lead at the end of the third quarter. Prescott coach Travis Stedman said, “We came out strong to start the second half and after that made some poor decisions that cost us. That is a good team over there and I would not be surprised if we saw them again in the playoffs.”

Deer Valley (6-1), went on a 7-0 run to start the final quarter to lead 53-45, and the Badgers were never really able to get back in it. The deficit grew to 61-48 at the midway point. Prescott cut the deficit to 65-57, but that was as close as they would get. The Skyhawks made their free throws down the stretch to secure the win. “We had some good looks at the basket but the ball wouldn’t fall in for us. They made their free throws down the stretch, which made it even tougher,” added Stedman. Zane Gaul led all scorers with 24 points, also having 8 rebounds. Uriah Tenette finished with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Andrew Lyon tossed in 8 points with 5 rebounds, and three steals.

The loss drops the Badgers to (3-1). Prescott will travel to face Tempe tonight at 7 pm.
