PRESCOTT WEATHER

Museum Youth Camp is “Full STEAM Ahead,” Oct. 11-14 – Sharlot Hall Museum

As the weather turns crisp, join the Sharlot Hall Museum as it moves beyond the names, dates, and events of history to dig into the connections between the past and the fields of STEAM in the upcoming “Full STEAM Ahead” youth camp. Get ready to uncover Arizona’s story in a whole new way.

How did irrigation technology impact Territorial Arizona? How were some of Prescott’s frontier homes designed and built? What principles do archaeologists use as they explore our land’s earliest history? Kids will learn the answers to these questions and more at “Full STEAM Ahead,” a brand new youth camp at the Sharlot Hall Museum, October 11-14.

Scheduled for October 11-14 and designed for kids ages 9-13, the camp focuses on the connections between Arizona history and STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). Activities will include building a mini irrigation system, constructing a historically-inspired model house, and investigating the practice of archaeology. Campers will enjoy a wide variety of activities over the four-day camp as they explore the Museum campus and learn through hands-on methods.

“This is one of several new camps we’ve done this year,” says education program manager Jenny Pederson. “We’ve wanted to host a camp that connects STEAM concepts with local history for some time—it’ll be a lot of fun!”

The Museum re-introduced youth camps to its public programming schedule in 2022, thanks to a grant from the Del Webb Foundation. Themes have included the history and building of toys (tied to the past exhibit “Toys! It’s Not All Fun & Games”), a reader’s theater camp, and now STEAM.

“Full STEAM Ahead” will take place October 11-14, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a special party at the end of the camp for families to see the projects their kids created earlier in the week. Museum members enjoy registration discounts—$95/child for members and $110/child for non-members. Participants can register online at www.sharlothallmuseum.org.

The Sharlot Hall Museum, located two blocks west of Prescott’s Courthouse Plaza, is one of Arizona’s premier history museums. Its four-acre campus tells Arizona’s story through exhibits, gardens, and historic buildings, including the 1864 Territorial Governor’s Mansion. Events and programs include the annual Prescott Indian Art Market, Sharlot’s Cellar, monthly Living History Adventure days, and more.
