The Sharlot Hall Museum’s Living History Adventure on Saturday, November 13, will bring Prescott’s military history into focus for Museum visitors. Guests of all ages are invited to this family-friendly program at the Sharlot Hall Museum in downtown Prescott, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The U.S. Military played a core part in Prescott’s past. Beginning with the 1863 establishment of Fort Whipple on the banks of Granite Creek, the Army provided protection for early settlers, miners, and ranchers in the wild Arizona Territory. The Fort was an epicenter of social activity in busy territorial Prescott and also held importance on the national scene: during the Indian Wars of the 1880s, Fort Whipple acted as tactical headquarters for one-fifth of the U.S. Army. Later, it transitioned to an Army hospital and became one of the nation’s largest treatment centers for respiratory ailments.
At Saturday’s program, costumed Living History interpreters will illustrate life in early Prescott with a military twist. Hear from Fort Whipple’s Hospital Steward in the Sharlot Hall Building, learn about WWI nursing at a special station, and unpack a military bag in the West Gallery (literally).
Activities include a special scavenger hunt to take you in and around the Museum campus on a fun search. Map out the items you’d pack in your own military bag and turn it into a puzzle. Interact with Living History interpreters and more!
The Sharlot Hall Museum’s Living History program happens on the second Saturday of each month, April through October, and aims to connect visitors with Prescott’s past.
