MATFORCE, an anti-drug organization focused on reducing youth substance use in Yavapai County, has partnered with Humboldt Unified School District to bring a new virtual learning series to support kinship families. Kinship families are relationships between individuals who are thought of as having family ties. Examples include grandparents raising grandchildren, aunts and uncles caring for nieces or nephews or foster families.
Kelly Lee, Family and Community Engagement Coordinator for Humboldt Unified School District (HUSD), said of the new learning series, “Kinship families are an integral part of our HUSD Family. We want to offer the support and resources necessary to help them provide a successful environment for their students. We look forward to providing these kinship conversations in partnership with MATFORCE as a way to provide tools they can use today and in the future.”
Drawing on almost two decades of experience helping parents, caregivers, and educators create and maintain positive growth and learning environments for children, Sandi Cheney will equip caregivers with tools to strengthen their relationships with those in their kinship family.
Sandi expressed her excitement in creating this new learning series. “Over the course of my parenting education career I’ve met so many people who have stepped into the role of raising their grandchildren or nieces and nephews. We designed this series to support these kinship families and to provide them tools for building positive, healthy relationships. I can’t wait to get started!”
This 3-part virtual learning series starts October 6th at 6:30 pm, with additional 1-hour classes on October 20th and 27th at 6:30 pm. This class is limited to 20 participants. Contact Kelly Lee at (928) 759-5109 or email kelly.lee@humboldtunified.com to register for this free event.
