Northern Arizona VA to Host POW/MIA Recognition Ceremony Sept. 18

The Northern Arizona VA Health Care System (NAVAHCS) will pay tribute to all former American Prisoners of War (POW) and those still Missing in Action (MIA) during a recognition ceremony on September 18 at the Bob Stump VA Medical Center in Prescott.

“It is our honor and duty to recognize the sacrifices made by our Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action,” said Steve Sample, NAVAHCS’s Executive Director. “Hosting this ceremony is a small way for us to show our gratitude and ensure their courage and resilience are never forgotten. These heroes remind us of the true cost of freedom, and it’s important for our community to come together, not only to honor their legacy but also to support their families and loved ones who continue to carry the burden of their absence.”

POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed on the third Friday of September each year to remember the more than 83,000 U.S. servicemembers who remain classified as either prisoners of war or missing in action.

President Jimmy Carter first established the observance in 1979, and every president since has continued it through an annual proclamation.
