Back to School Traffic Safety Reminders – Prescott Police Department

With local schools going back into session on Thursday, August 6th, The Prescott Police Department would like to take a moment to remind motorists and pedestrians of traffic safety laws regarding school zones and school buses and share a few common violations encountered.

Typically, the most common violation observed regarding school zones is speeding. Due to increased pedestrian traffic, Arizona Law requires motorists to travel at a speed of not more than 15 miles per hour while in a posted designated school zone.  Another common problem observed is motorists failing to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. Motorists are required to come to a complete stop while pedestrians are crossing the street and remain stopped until the pedestrian has completely crossed the street.

Related to school zones and safety are school bus pick up and drop offs. To help ensure the safety of our children, the Prescott Police Department would like to remind motorists following or approaching a school bus to always leave ample room for stopping. Additionally, when a school bus comes to a stop with its lights on and stop sign out, motorists in both directions are required to come to a complete stop and remain stopped until the stop arm is lowered and the bus resumes motion. The only exception to this law is if the roadway is divided by a raised median. In such cases opposing traffic is not required to stop.

The Prescott Police Department will have increased presence in school zones and bus routes to help ensure the safety of our children. We are urging drivers to be extra vigilant, put away any devices that may distract you and slow down while approaching and driving through school zones and around school buses.
