Honoring the Granite Mountain Hotshots – City of Prescott

On June 30, 2013, 19 members of the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew made the ultimate sacrifice while battling the Yarnell Hill Fire. Each year, the Prescott community pauses in remembrance to honor their service and sacrifice.

The City of Prescott, the Prescott Fire Department, and the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew Learning and Tribute Center encourage citizens to participate in commemorative events and moments of reflection marking the 13th anniversary.

The program will include remarks from Center Board Chair John Marsh, Prescott Fire Chief Holger Durre, and other dignitaries. The event will also recognize the 8th anniversary of the Learning and Tribute Center, which serves as a place of remembrance, education, and reflection.

Yavapai County will mark the anniversary by ringing the Courthouse bells 19 times, honoring each of the fallen Granite Mountain Hotshots. This observance is intended as a quiet moment of reflection, with no public program or remarks.

“On behalf of the people of Prescott, we will never forget the brave 19 who laid down their lives,” said Mayor Cathey Rusing. “We will always hold them in our hearts, and June 30th will forever be a day when our community comes together to honor their memory.”

Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial

The Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial, located on the east side of the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza near Cortez Street and Union, stands as a permanent tribute to the 19 firefighters. Dedicated in 2024, the memorial serves as a year-round place of remembrance.

The City of Prescott and the Prescott Fire Department extend their gratitude to the memorial committee for more than a decade of work in creating this lasting tribute honoring the fallen heroes.
