Underdogs Come Through at The Cal Cordes Memorial – Ron Williams

A long time friend of Cal, Cody Williams won the Cal Cordes Memorial on Saturday.

Mike Brewer has yet to lose a game going (11-0) in the two Cal Cordes memorial Tournaments.

Jay Mast, another long time friend of Cal, won Class C for the second consecutive year.

Three local pitchers took home first place in the 2nd annual Cal Cordes Memorial Tournament held at the Watson Lake horseshoe courts. None of the top seeds were able to end the day with wins as the underdogs all came through. Two of the winners won their classes at the inaugural tournament held on May 3, 2025.

Prescott’s own Cody Williams was seeded third and swept the entire Class A division to take home the top honor. Williams survived close calls though winning 48-44 of Bruce Reid, 48-40 over Hal Handelman and the closest of all at the end beating Russ Watkins 49-46. Handleman of Chino Valley took second and Bruce Reid of Congress finished third. Last year Trisha Lincoln won the inaugural Cal Cordes Memorial but was sidelined with an injury and was unable to play.

Mike Brewer of Prescott won for the second consecutive year and was the other player to go undefeated in his class to take first place in Class B. Brewer pitched 2.22% above his average on the day. Vance Upper from Port Sanilac, Michigan took second place. Robert Chubinsky of Surprise finished third.

Make it two in a row for Jay Mast of Prescott Valley who had the best day by pitching 10.12% above his season average to win Class C. Mast went (4-1) with his only loss to Bryant Smith Jr. of Peach Springs, who finished second. Smith bested Mast 27-22 in the second game of the day, but Mast rebounded and finished strong. Kelly Cordes of Dewey took third place in his first tournament. Mast also won the Class C by going (5-1) at last years Cal Cordes Memorial.

Prescott Valley will be hosting a tournament this Saturday, April 25 at 9am at American Legion Park on Bob Drive. The next tournament in Prescott will be on Saturday, May 2 at 9am.
