Every two seconds, a patient in the U.S. relies on a ready blood supply to provide lifesaving medical care. This April, nonprofit Vitalant urges all who are eligible to spring into action and give blood to keep up with the constant need. From April 1 to 5, Vitalant is thanking all donors with a chance to win a $10,000 prepaid gift card.* And donors who give with Vitalant April 6-30 will automatically be entered to win one of two $10,000 prepaid gift cards in the Groceries for a Year Giveaway. (See vitalant.org/luckygiveaway and vitalant.org/grocerygiveaway for terms, conditions and official rules.)
Donors of all types are needed to help patients of all blood types. The need is greatest for type O, the most transfused and most compatible when there’s no time to test a patient’s blood type.
April is National Volunteer Month, a reminder that it takes a variety of volunteers to support an always ready blood supply. In addition to donating blood and hosting community blood drives, Vitalant volunteers also include hundreds of individuals who assist with a variety of tasks.
Cindy Forster volunteers with Vitalant as a blood delivery driver. She’s also a blood donor, inspired by her family’s journey.
“My sister is a life-long survivor of blood disease. I first learned how important blood donation can be when she needed a transfusion,” Cindy said. “My daughter and dad have also benefited greatly from the generosity of donors and the care of medical teams. Being a regular blood donor is my way of helping others recover from injuries or disease.”
Most people are eligible to donate blood. Learn more and make an appointment to give at vitalant.org, download and use the Vitalant blood donor app or call 877-25-VITAL (877-258-4825).
