A motorcyclist was seriously injured Wednesday night in a single-vehicle crash on Cornville Road after apparently colliding with a javelina.
Just after 8:30 pm, on October 15, Yavapai County Sheriff deputies responded to an accident off Cornville Road and East Kimberleys Way for a report of a motorcycle crash. Upon arrival, they found a male driver, receiving emergency medical attention. He was then airlifted to a hospital in Flagstaff.
An initial investigation at the scene determined the crash involved a motorcycle and an animal. A witness reported seeing a javelina run into the road. According to the witness, the rider swerved to avoid the animal but appeared to strike it, which caused him to lose control of the motorcycle and leave the roadway.
Evidence found at the scene, including what appeared to be animal hair on the motorcycle’s front forks, supported the witness’s account.
Our thoughts are with the rider, and his recovery. This unfortunate accident is a critical reminder that wildlife encounters are a real danger on our rural roads, especially after dark. Stay extra vigilant, drive cautiously and continuously scan the edges of the roadway for unpredictable animals.
