One detainee is dead and two others critically injured after a shooting at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Dallas on Sept. 24, according to authorities.

The suspect also died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The shooter opened fire from a nearby rooftop.

No law enforcement officials were injured in the incident, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said in a press conference later on Sept. 24.

Rounds found near the suspect, who was found dead when officials arrived, contained messages that were “anti-ICE in nature,” FBI Special Agent in Charge of the Dallas office Joe Rothrock said during the press conference.

The attack was an act of “targeted violence,” Rothrock said.

Johnson urged people to pray in response to the incident.

“But maybe even more to the point, we are a country and a city that needs prayer,” Johnson said at the press event. “I’m going to ask you all to join me also in praying for this city, that we can come together at a time like this, and that we can be there for one another the way we always have.

“[Prayer will] help us all get through this very difficult time—not just in our city, but in our country.”

The incident was initially confirmed by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who said the suspect in the shooting died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“There was a shooting this morning at the Dallas [ICE] Field Office,” Noem said in a statement posted on X. “Details are still emerging but we can confirm there were multiple injuries and fatalities.”

“[The suspected shooter] is deceased by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop. Please pray for the victims and their families.”

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons told CNN that “preliminary information is a possible sniper.”

“We have three individuals that are down at this time. We’re not sure on their condition. They’ve been taken to the hospital,” Lyons said.

Later on Wednesday, the Homeland Security Department said it was responding to the shooting with increased security nationwide.

“In light of today’s horrific shooting that was motivated by hatred for ICE, Secretary Noem has ordered DHS to immediately begin increasing security at ICE facilities across the country,” the agency wrote on X.

Federal and local officials did not reveal the identities of the shooting suspect or the victims.

This morning just before 7am local time, an individual fired multiple rounds at a Dallas, Texas ICE facility, killing one, wounding several others, before taking his own life. FBI, DHS, ATF are on the ground with Dallas PD and state authorities.

Local Dallas media outlets reported that the shooting occurred at a Dallas field office located at 8101 North Stemmons Freeway. Traffic camera footage from the Texas Department of Transportation, seen by The Epoch Times, showed a significant law enforcement presence near the ICE building.

Vice President JD Vance said in a post on X that the “obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop,” responding to Noem’s statement on Sept. 24.

“I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families,” he said.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and ICE officials have said that ICE agents have faced a large increase in assaults this year.

“Our ICE officers are facing a more than 1000 percent increase in assaults against them, including vehicles being used as weapons towards them, and doxing campaigns targeting federal officers and their families,” DHS said in a statement earlier this week, responding to a measure signed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom that would require federal agents not to wear masks.

“When our heroic law enforcement officers conduct operations, they clearly identify themselves as law enforcement while wearing masks to protect themselves from being targeted by highly sophisticated gangs like Tren de Aragua and MS-13, criminal rings, murderers, and rapists,” the agency stated.

“Our officers also wear vests marked with ICE/ERO or Homeland Security and are flanked by vehicles marked with the name of the department.”

The shooting on Sept. 24 is the third time that ICE or Customs and Border Protection officials have been targeted in Texas in 2025.

At the Prairieland Detention Facility in Alvarado, Texas, on July 4, about a dozen assailants who were equipped with weapons and tactical gear attacked ICE officials. A local law enforcement officer was injured during the process, according to DHS.

“This is precisely what we have been warning against, as disinformation and dangerous politically-motivated rhetoric spreads,” Lyons said in a statement at the time.

Also in July, officials killed a man with a rifle and tactical gear after he shot at a Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas, the agency stated.

The ICE shooting on Sept. 24 also comes two weeks after conservative influencer Charlie Kirk was assassinated during an event at Utah Valley University and just days after a man was arrested after firing three shots inside an ABC affiliate station in Sacramento, California, and allegedly left a threatening note that named several Trump administration officials.

This week, White House border czar Tom Homan told Fox News that roughly 2 million illegal immigrants have either been deported or departed the United States voluntarily since the Trump administration took office.
