Vitalant is urging all eligible volunteer blood donors to help prevent a summer shortage by giving blood this July. Vitalant is Arizona’s largest non-profit community blood provider that fulfills transfusion needs for 100% of the hospitals in Maricopa County and 90% statewide. Donations around the Independence Day holiday were among the lowest of the year. Donors of all blood types are urgently needed to rebuild supplies, especially type O, the most transfused blood type. O-negative can be used to help any patient in an emergency and O-positive can help any patient with a positive blood type. July blood donors help people like Mary Jo, a retired Arizona nurse who relies on monthly blood transfusions to live. At age 5, she was diagnosed with Beta Thalassemia Intermedia, a genetic blood disorder that substantially shortens the lifespan of red blood cells. The disease triggers anemia and impacts normal growth and development. Mary Jo estimates that she has required more than 250 blood transfusions and the lifesaving blood keeps coming every three to four weeks. Thanks to Arizona blood donors, she has been able to be a mom, to be a nurse and to be alive! Mary Jo required two type-O blood transfusions on July 3, 2024.
