At 4:24 PM on December 2nd, 2023, the Prescott Regional Communications Center dispatched Prescott Fire Department (PFD) units, Engine 73, Engine 74, Support 74, Battalion 1, and an AMR ambulance in response to a 911 call reporting an injured hiker in distress on the Iron King Trail, Northwest side of Glassford Hill.
The hiker, who had fallen approximately 40 feet down a near-vertical slope, sustained traumatic injuries. Despite the challenges posed by darkness, cold weather, and rugged terrain, PFD Emergency Crews swiftly located the patient in a high, rocky, isolated area just before nightfall.
Initiating emergency paramedic care, PFD Technical Rescue Technicians expertly packaged the patient for evacuation. Multiple rope systems were skillfully employed during the evacuation process to ensure the safe and efficient movement of the injured hiker.
Acknowledging the complexity of the operation, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) Backcountry Team played a crucial role in facilitating the evacuation. The collaborative efforts of PFD, AMR, and YCSO teams were paramount in overcoming the challenges of the rugged terrain and environmental conditions.
Once safely back to the main trail system, the patient was transported to a level 1 trauma center via AMR and Native Air. The coordinated response and professionalism demonstrated by the emergency crews highlight the commitment of the Prescott Fire Department, AMR, Native Air, and YCSO to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
