First Responder Blood Drive Challenge Seeks Donors to Meet Holiday Patient Transfusion Needs

Help Arizona firefighters and police officers ensure an ample patient blood supply by donating during the First Responders Holiday Blood Drive Challenge. Thanksgiving and through New Year’s Eve is the most difficult time of the year to maintain our blood supply. First responders know first-hand you can’t wait for an emergency to donate – it’s the blood on the shelves that saves lives. In appreciation for giving blood through Dec. 24, Streets of New York is thanking all blood donors in Chino Valley, Prescott and Prescott Valley with a voucher for a complimentary 10” cheese pizza.  To make a blood donation appointment, visit vitalant.orgdownload and use the Vitalant app or call 877-25-VITAL (877-258-4825)

First responders know first-hand that you can’t wait for an emergency to donate. It is the blood already on the shelves that saves lives.

On March 24, 2023, Phoenix Police Officer Bullis was first on the scene after a vehicle crashed into a south Phoenix home. The driver fled the vehicle and began shooting at Officer Bullis in an “ambush attack.” After being shot in the hip and suffering shrapnel injures to the face, she was able to get to safety and provide additional information to fellow officers. At the time of the shooting, Officer Bullis had served with the Phoenix Police Department for nearly one year. After months of recovery, she was finally able to return to patrol on July 12. “Every day, my fellow brothers and sisters face difficult and dangerous situations in the line of duty,” said Officer Bullis. “A strong blood supply can make the difference of living and being able to go home.”

The winter holiday season is the most difficult time of the year to maintain Arizona’s blood supply. “Holiday blood donors are urgently needed, said Sid Lewis, Vice President for the Vitalant Southwest Division. “Since blood has a shelf life of 42 days, donations given in December can help save lives through New Year’s Day and beyond.” Donors of all blood types are needed, especially the universal blood type O.

In appreciation for building holiday blood supplies, Vitalant is also thanking all donors through Dec. 17 with a $10 gift card. For more information, visit 2023 Thank You Gift (vitalant.org).
