At about 9 PM on Saturday, July 1st, Prescott Regional Communications Center started to receive 911 calls about a wildland fire near the boat ramp of Willow Lake. Initial reports received said the wildland fire was burning in the brush and trees with a moderate amount of spread. The first arriving fire engine on scene reported the fire about 1/4 to 1/2 acre in size with 15 foot flame lengths. That CAFMA fire engine was able to pull a preconnected hose line to attack the fire while a Prescott Fire Engine and a U.S. Forest Service wildland crew assisted in the surrounding of it. Prescott Police Dept. also assisted in helping maintain control of the situation as crowds were there watching Prescott’s fireworks show.
It appeared that the fire started from illegal fireworks used within the area surrounding the boat dock at Willow Lake. Illegal fireworks use – it’s just that – Illegal. The wrong day, with the wrong wind combined with the wrong humidity could be disastrous for our forests. Remember… Carelessness is the greatest source of forest fires in our community!
