Fire Managers on the Prescott National Forest were successful in treating three areas on the Verde Ranger District last week.
April 20 -21, 2023, fire personnel treated 250 acres on the Springs RX located on Mingus Mountain near the junction of Forest Service Road 132/105 and Mingus Springs Ranch (T15N, R2E, Sec 28); 690 acres on the Strawberry RX located on Mingus Mountain near the junction of Forest Service Road 132/105 and Mingus Springs Ranch (T15N, R2E, Sec 33 & 34); and 100 acres on the Crater RX located near Powell Springs Campground, south of the community of Cherry.
As crews continue to monitor and secure the burn units, they noticed visible light smoke on the Spring RX as interior pockets of fuels continue to burn and smolder. Resources will remain on scene monitoring through the remainder of the week and weekend if necessary. Smoke may be visible from Prescott Valley, Prescott and Chino Valley and linger in drainages and valleys overnight.
Prescott National Forest’s land management strategy is centered on long-term forest health and the strategy includes reducing forest fuels and using prescribed fire on the landscape. Using low to moderate fire behavior, we can better protect communities, while improving watersheds, wildlife habitat, and forest health.
