In honor of National Donate Life Month in April, Vitalant urges all eligible donors to make an appointment to give and ensure every patient who needs blood can be treated without delay. Every day, nonprofit Vitalant needs more than 600 donations to support Arizona patients, including those undergoing organ or blood marrow transplants. In appreciation for saving lives, all March 27 – May 15 blood donors are being thanked with a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card* redeemable by email. To make a blood donation appointment, download the Vitalant app, visit vitalant.org or call 877-25-VITAL (877-258-4825) – Chino Valley, Paulden, Prescott, Prescott Valley and Yarnell locations detailed below.
Blood donors help people like Amanda, who is alive today because of 112 red blood cell, platelet and plasma transfusions. Amanda was diagnosed with a rare genetic liver condition known as Wilson’s Disease while she was a senior at Desert Mountain High School. When her liver completely shut down, doctors saved her life with an immediate transplant and blood transfusions. “Blood donors gave me the gift of life,” Amanda said. “Their generosity will always be a part of who I am. As a matter of fact, they inspired me to become a nurse.” Thanks to the gift of life, Amanda has realized her dreams of becoming a wife, mother of three daughters and a nurse at a Valley children’s hospital.
Blood and platelet transfusions save lives every day, providing patients battling various medical conditions with the necessary blood components to get better. Platelets are also crucial for patients with cancer or blood disorders who may require chemotherapy or radiation therapy, which can damage their bone marrow and decrease platelet production. Donations of all blood types are critical, and especially type O, because it is transfused the most often. O-negative blood can help patients with any blood type, including premature babies.
