Hypnotically Speaking

Happy Fourth of July! The Fourth of July is also known as Independence Day. It celebrates our country’s separation from the British Empire in 1776 and the founding of the United States. I think it’s an appropriate time to think of how we can break away from limiting beliefs. Henry Ford said, ”Whether you think you can, or think you can’t – you’re right.” At one time it was believed impossible to run a four minute mile until Roger Bannister ran the four minute mile in the 1952 Olympics. The barrier was set for decades before he did what seemed impossible. Just 46 days after he broke the barrier it was broken yet again. The following year three more runners broke the four-minute barrier in the same race. All it took was for one man to break that belief in his mind to make it happen for others.

I would like to share a beautiful technique shared by Karen Hand, a well known hypnotherapist and teacher from Chicago. I love how she teaches simple techniques using Hypnosis and NLP. If there is a limiting belief you have, her method can be very effective. Think about a belief that gets in your way. Common limiting beliefs can be, “I’m not good enough, smart enough, or pretty enough.” Before beginning this exercise think of your limiting belief, that gets in the way of your success, and then think of a better feeling belief.

Zap Limiting Beliefs by Karen Hand:

  1. Imagine a big white board in front of you. Pick up the marker there and write your limiting belief on the board.

  2. Take a nice big eraser or cloth and swirl it all over the board, even in the corners, and completely erase that limiting belief making that board pristine again.

  3. Now write that better feeling belief on the board in big letters.

  4. Pick up some of the colored markers there and colorize those letters. Make it one bright color, or different colors, whatever you like. Now it is in full living color.

  5. Think of some uplifting music and watch the letters begin to dance and move all over the white board.

  6. Watch them dance right off the board and into your head. Watch them swirl and circle in your head. How many times do they need to swirl and circle until it is real to you? It may take 5-10-100 times until that belief becomes real to you. Let it go all the way down through every cell, muscle, tissue, and organ in our body; all the way down and back up to your head again, more powerful, more and more bold and colorful.

  7. Now watch your better feeling belief dance up and to your right onto a billboard. See it big and bright in full living color.

  8. Add a picture to the billboard that displays your success, anything that triggers your success.

  9. Stare as long as needed until that belief becomes real.

Now you can celebrate your freedom from your old limiting belief and move forward. I’m sure Roger Bannister saw and believed in his success many times before he broke the four minute mile.
