This was the much-anticipated rematch of two good teams this season in the Grand Canyon Region, unfortunately ending with a bad taste for the home team, as the Badgers dropped, what turned out to be a frustrating contest, 42-35 in the Badger Dome last night.
Coach Travis Stedman said, “We played a great first half, and had a six point lead in the third. Then all of sudden we forgot how to play. We made too many mistakes that cost us the chance to win.”
The game was nip and tuck from the get go, as the teams took turns with the lead. Jason Parent, who led Prescott in scoring with 16, dominated the second quarter with 9 of the Badgers 11 points, giving Prescott a slim 19-18 lead at the half.
The second half started with the Badgers building a 29-23 lead after Parent hit a three pointer with 4:33 left in the third quarter. The Prescott offense would go silent for the next 8 plus minutes of game time.
Coconino slowly climb back on top and took the lead for good with 7:02 left in the game. Aidan Roig hit a midrange jumper for Coconino, giving them their first lead since the first quarter, 30-29.
The Panthers led 33-29 with 4:20 left by the time the Badgers scored again. Scooter Schwartz ended the lengthy drought with his drive to the basket.
Jason Parent had what appeared to be a steal, but was rung up for a foul, turning out to be a big call at the time, with Prescott trailing by two, 35-33, and slowing the Badgers comeback down. Trailing 37-33 with 1:28 left, the Badgers were unable to secure a rebound on a missed free throw, resulting in the shooter getting the ball back. It came down to Prescott not being able to overcome their own mistakes.
Coconino ended up outscoring Prescott 19-6 in the final 12:33 of the game.
Stedman added, “I knew we had a good chance to beat them on our home court after the three point loss in Flagstaff, but we could not overcome ourselves in the process. Coconino did what they needed to do and we did not.”
Milap Owens, who scored 17 at Coconino, was held to just 4. Preston Olney had a likewise performance for Coconino. After scoring 16 at home, he was held to just 5. Manuel Cordoza led the Panthers with 15. Parent accounted for 45% of the Prescott offense with his 16 points. The Badgers had only two free throw attempts the entire game, as they were unable to get the calls in the paint.
The Badgers fall to (5-3) in the Grand Canyon Region, and (6-4) overall. Prescott will face a tough Peoria team tonight in the Badger Dome. Tip time set for 7:00pm. Coconino remains in the drivers seat of the GCR at (8-0) and undefeated at (11-0).

Prescott led early and held a 18-15 lead at the half, but a big Lady Marauder third quarter to build a 37-26 lead was too much to overcome for the Lady Badgers.
