The Prescott Badgers held a two point lead with just over 90 seconds to play, but a series of unfortunate events led to a Mesquite comeback and a 67-55 win over the visiting Badgers.
Coach Travis Stedman, “It was a back and forth game, and actually a really great basketball game, with a really unfortunate ending.”
The Badgers had their chances down the stretch, but could not make a shot in the last minute and a half, meanwhile Mesquite made their free throws to bolster the final point margin.
Cohen Gonzales led all scorers with 23. Jason Parent led the Badgers with 21. Milap Ownes and Chandler Weber had 9 each.
Mesquite took a lead of four after one quarter, that grew to seven by intermission. The Badgers fought hard to climb to within one at 46-45 to start the final eight minutes.
Prescott came back to take the lead 55-53 with just over a minute and a half left, but that is where it went downhill. The Wildcats Gonzales drilled a three pointer to take back the Mesquite lead. After that the Badgers could not buy a basket and multiple trips to the line by the Wildcats sealed the game.
Mesquite improved to (6-4), while the Badgers dropped to (6-3). Prescott will have two very tough games this coming week, both at home, versus Coconino and Peoria. Game times for both are at 7:00 pm. Games may be seen on the Badger Media Youtube page.
