Hypnotically Speaking: Pyramid of the Mind

The beautiful thing about hypnosis is being able to have access to our whole mind. Being aware of the function of the conscious, subconscious and unconscious mind, and how they communicate with each other to influence our behaviors, responses, and outcomes in our lives is the key to understanding how hypnosis works.

Let’s take a look at the mind. I like to use the model of a pyramid to illustrate the mind. At the top of the pyramid is the conscious mind. The conscious mind occupies about 10% of our mind. The subconscious mind occupies about 50-60%, and the unconscious mind about 30-40% of the mind. The unconscious mind is simply a deeper state of the subconscious mind.

When considering the conscious mind, one must understand that the conscious mind has choice. That’s right: the conscious mind always has choice of what we look at, listen to, analyze, criticize, judge, accept or reject. Our ability to choose is our God-given gift at birth. It is our free will. As we go along you will have a greater understanding of why the conscious mind is at the top of the pyramid, and how this is where our true power lies.

Most of us try to solve problems with just a tiny part our mind, our conscious mind. While the conscious mind is very limited, the subconscious and unconscious mind has seemingly unlimited resources. Using self-hypnosis you will see how easy it is to make changes using your whole mind. This is why Albert Einstein put himself into a state of self-hypnosis daily to do much of his work. His “theory of relativity” came to him while in a trance state. Google famous people who use hypnosis on a regular basis. You will be surprised at what you find.

Now let’s look at the marvelous subconscious and unconscious mind. The subconscious and unconscious acts like the database of a computer—our own personal computer. Everything you have ever learned or experienced is programmed into the subconscious and unconscious part of your mind. It takes direction from the conscious mind; anyone’s conscious mind. It loves repetition. It is always alert, whether we are sleeping, under anesthetic, or in a coma, because it controls the body’s function. The most important aspect of the subconscious and unconscious mind is knowing it will always act out and act toward our most dominant thoughts and feelings.

My job as a hypnotherapist is to give suggestion to my clients to shift their focus from their current reality toward their good and their goal by engaging their senses, thoughts and emotions in the direction of their desire.

Think of the subconscious and unconscious as a beautiful vehicle just waiting for you to get in, start the engine, put your foot on the gas pedal, and give it direction. For any significant change it is absolutely necessary to give direction and focus toward what you want, or your subconscious and unconscious mind will keep moving you in the same direction as it always has in the past, gaining more and more momentum. Now there are many programs in our subconscious and unconscious mind that serve us in powerful ways. At the same time there are programs that get in the way of our living our best life possible. Hypnosis is a powerful tool to shift the negative programs to positive programs to improve our life on many levels.

Next time we will look at how easily the subconscious and unconscious mind are programmed and how that information is stored and communicated to the conscious mind.
