MISSISSAUGA, Ontario, Canada – The new year keeps getting better for the Northern Arizona Suns, who handled the Canton Charge 119-94 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
The Suns (11-14) finished a perfect 2-0 at the NBA G League Showcase and extended their season-long winning streak to four games. Since the turn of the calendar to 2018, NAZ is 4-0.
The Suns also won their first game against the Charge (9-16) in team history, evening the all-time series 1-1.
Mike Young powered Northern Arizona with his team-leading sixth double-double on the year, recording 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 11 rebounds off the bench. Young averaged 16.0 points and 11.0 rebounds at the Showcase, earning double-doubles in both games. It was his first career stretch of double-doubles.
Archie Goodwin led the Suns in scoring with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting, plus 5-of-6 from the free throw line. He also recorded nine rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks in 31 minutes, making his first start with Northern Arizona.
The Suns started off Friday’s matchup cold, shooting 7-of-21 from the field and 2-of-8 from distance, falling behind 23-22 after the first 12 minutes. Northern Arizona owned the second and third frames though, shooting 27-of-45 (.600) from the field and 8-of-16 from three-point land to score 73 points combined. That lifted them to a 95-69 lead entering the fourth quarter, a deficit the Charge found insurmountable.
Northern Arizona forced Canton to just 94 points on 36.0 percent shooting for the game, tying and setting opponent season-lows, respectively.
Besides Goodwin and Young, five other Suns scored in double-figures, matching the most players for NAZ to score 10+ points in the same game this season.
Peter Jok (16 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the three-point line) and Eric Stuteville (14 points) each achieved new career-highs. Xavier Silas scored 13 points with three three-point makes to extend his career-long streak of making a shot from distance to 25 games long. Josh Gray (12 points, eight rebounds, five assists) and Davon Reed (10 points, seven rebounds, two blocks) rounded out the double-digit scoring for NAZ.
Kevin Olekaibe led the Charge with 23 points, to go with seven rebounds and five steals. JaCorey Williams (16 points, nine rebounds) and Caleb Swanigan (12 points, 14 rebounds) also had big games for Canton.
The Suns will close their seven-game road trip on Thursday in Austin at 6:30 p.m. MT. With four straight wins, NAZ is 4-2 on the trip currently. The Charge will head home to host the Raptors 905 at 9 a.m. MT on Wednesday.
