PRESCOTT VALLEY – The Northern Arizona Suns announced Friday they have activated guard Xavier Silas, who is on the roster as a returning player.
The Suns also announced Friday they have traded forward Greg Mays, who was one of their 2016 NBA D-League 2nd round draft picks.
Silas is expected to make his season debut on Saturday, Dec. 3, against the Reno Bighorns at the Prescott Valley Event Center at 7 p.m. The 28-year-old was not with the Suns through their first seven games of the season, as he was tending to the birth of his child.
Silas, who is 6-foot 5-inches tall and 198 pounds, was claimed by the Bakersfield Jam on Jan. 14, 2016, and played in 27 games, starting 25 of them. He averaged 18.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals for the Jam, and earned career highs in points, rebounds and steals. He scored 31 vs. Texas on March 17, grabbed 10 rebounds vs. Rio Grande Valley on Feb. 4, and achieved five steals vs. Oklahoma City on Jan. 23.
The former Jam player who returns as a member of the Suns is set to begin his fourth season in the D-League, as he also played for the Maine Red Claws for two seasons (2011-13).
In his 99 career games in the D-League, Silas is averaging 12.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists.
After college, Silas signed a contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. He appeared in two regular season games and two postseason games for the team in 2011-12. He scored 11 points in 39 minutes in the regular season, while getting two points and two rebounds in four minutes in the playoffs.
Silas has played in preseason action with the Washington Wizards (2013 and 2014), and played in Summer League action with the Minnesota Timberwolves (2016) and Milwaukee Bucks (2013).
In between his professional stints in the United States, Silas continued to work on his craft by playing professionally overseas for five different teams.
Silas went undrafted in the 2011 NBA Draft after playing four years collegiately. He played his first two seasons at the University of Colorado (2006-08) and played in 48 games, achieving 10.9 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game and 1.7 assists per game there. He then transferred to Northern Illinois where he scored 22.3 points per game as a senior and was named to the All-Mac First Team.
The Suns traded Mays to the Delaware 87ers in exchange for their 2017 NBA D-League 6th round draft pick. The trade is not subject to a physical.
The Suns selected Mays in the 2nd round of this year’s draft, 30th overall. Mays played in five games for Northern Arizona this season. He averaged 2.8 points and 1.2 rebounds in 4.2 minutes per game.
He saw his best game against the defending D-League champion Sioux Falls Skyforce on Nov. 27, where he achieved career-highs in points (eight), rebounds (three) and field goals (4-for-5).
