Errors Cost #1-Seeded Roughrider Softball In Elimination Game Defeat

PRESCOTT- Following a loss to Eastern Arizona College on Friday afternoon in the NJCAA Region One Playoffs, the two teams met again on Saturday in a playoff elimination game as the #1-seeded Roughriders committed six errors and fell to Eastern Arizona 10-2, ending their season.

“It’s a crazy game,” Roughrider softball head coach Doug Eastman said. “If you look how we played for fifty-two games during the regular season, and then we just got to the postseason (and) for whatever reason we just didn’t have anything….the pitching was bad, the hitting was bad, the defense was bad.”

“It’s just one of those things where we didn’t cycle right this weekend,” Eastman continued.

As was the case in the game Friday, Eastern Arizona jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first three innings, one coming across on a throwing error with two outs in the first inning. The Roughriders would get a bit closer with an RBI single by Shayna Ige in the bottom of the third inning but Eastern Arizona tacked on seven runs over the next two innings, with five coming across in the fifth inning, and cruised to the mercy-ruled victory.

“This game didn’t really go the way we wanted it to,” said Roughrider freshman outfielder Mariah Kalamaras. “Obviously we wanted to win this game, move on, and double dip Central (Central Arizona College) but, you know, these things happen.”

Kiana Spencer, who was battling a shoulder issue, started the game and took the loss.

The loss marks the end to a successful season for the Roughrider softball team who won the ACCAC Regular Season Championship going 44-4 in the conference while sporting a 49-7 overall record.

“I told the girls yesterday that win or lose, I thought it was one of the better teams that I ever coached in my career,” Eastman said. “When you look top to bottom at the talent on this field, obviously the result should have been different then it was but that’s why you play this game. That’s why it’s a fun sport.”
