Badgers Boys Basketball Can't Overcome Early Deficit

PRESCOTT- After winning two straight games, the Prescott High School mens basketball team lost to the Marcos De Niza Padres 90-64 at home on Friday night.

The Badgers came out of the gate slow as the team trailed 23-9 after one quarter was completed. Prescott Badgers mens basketball head coach Adam Neely contributes the slow start to a lack of focus.

“We gave up a ton of early uncontested jump shots,” Neely said. “It’s one thing to give up jump shots, it’s another thing to give up ones that we don’t even get our hands up and contest and that’s what hurt us early.”

The Badgers improved and outscored the Padres in the second and third quarter even making it a single digit deficit before the fourth quarter began.

“I think we provided more energy in those quarters,” said Badgers senior guard Walter Riggs. “I think we started running more and started just trusting in each other.”

However, the early hole was too deep to dig out of as the Badgers had to press in the final minutes of the game. Once the Badgers began to run out of gas, the Padres were able to run away in the last four minutes of the game to outscore the Badgers 28-13 in the final quarter to pick up the win.

“This is a wakeup call,” Riggs said. “It just shows that we need to have more effort in the game.”

Coach Neely plans to continue working on execution in the upcoming practices.

“It’s not a scenario where we are going to rework something that we think didn’t work,” Neely said. “We’re going to remind ourselves what has been working for us and just refocus on those.”

The Badgers (10-7, 2-3) remain at home and welcome in the Mingus Marauders (4-13, 2-4) for a 7pm tipoff on Tuesday.
