Things looked pretty dim for the Prescott Lady Badgers heading into the fourth quarter. Trailing by their largest deficit of 13, Prescott managed to fight their way back, tying the game in the final seconds of regulation, then going on to win in overtime 48-44 over the Mohave Thunderbirds, in the Badger Dome last night.
Kira Reily was cool, calm, and collected as he did exactly what needed to be done, to get the game tied. "Actually, I was really nervous," said Reily. " I just tried not to think about it (free throws), and do what I had to do."
Mohave jumped on top early. The Lady Badgers first lead came at 9-8, but the Thunderbirds went on a 5-0 run to get the lead back at 13-9.
Prescott came back to get within one, as Mohave led 21-20 at the half.
The Thunderbirds came out in the second half and built a 28-20 lead with 5:16 left in the third quarter.Mohave expanded their lead to 39-26 after three quarters.
Neither team could get the ball in the basket for the first three plus minutes of the final quarter, then the Lady Badgers came alive.
Alisa LeBlanc got it started with at the 4:54 mark to make it 39-28. Hollie Dalton hit a three and suddenly the deficit was single digits, 39-30. Kira Reily's bucket trimmed it to 39-32 with 4:11 left.
Mohave attempted to slow offense to work some clock with the seven point lead, but that did not last long.
Reily nailed a three to climb within four at 39-35, with 2:29 remaining. A rainbow jumper on the baseline by Desiree Johnson brought Prescott to within two, at 39-37 with just under two minutes to play.
Alyssa Heath, who led all scorers with 32, spent most of her time in the fourth quarter at the free throw line, made one of two free throws and the score was 40-37.
After a Prescott turnover, Reily made a heads up steal and basket, and with the crowd behind them, the Lady badgers had pulled to within one, 40-39, with :52 remaining. Heath made three more free throws and once again it did not look good for Prescott.
Reily was fouled in the corner while attempting a three pointer with :05 remaining, sending her to the line for three free throws. She netted the first two, then coach Bobbi Yoder called a timeout. Still down by two with one free throw left, Reily missed the shot and grabbed the rebound, and once again was fouled trying to go up for a shot. Reily sank both to tie the game at 43, sending the game to overtime.
Alyssa Heath made one of two free throws in overtime and Mohave had a brief lead again at 44-43.
Hollie Dalton drove the lane and scored the go ahead basket. Reily and Dalton added free throws and the Lady badgers had completed their comeback in dramatic fashion.
Hollie Dalton said, "We needed this win game in our region to put us in a better position for the playoffs."
Rebounds were plentiful for the Lady Badgers. Kira Reily had 13 to go with her 21 points, 3 blocks and 2 steals. Alisa LeBlanc also had 13 rebounds, 7 points, and 3 steals. Hollie Dalton had 10 to go with her 16 points, 3 assists, and 2 blocks.
Prescott (3-3) in the Grand Canyon Region, and (7-7) overall, will travel to Peoria on Tuesday, at 7pm.
