Canyon del Oro Stops Prescott 23-13

31 August 2019

Badgers held scoreless in second half

In their first game at Ken Lindley Field, aka City Park, since 1967, the Prescott Badgers suffered a second half shutdown in a 23-13 loss to Canyon Del Oro.

A large crowd was on hand for the game on a very warm evening in Prescott.

The Dorados put together one good drive midway through the opening quarter, capped off by a 2 yard run by Jared Vazquez. David Alvarado added the extra pint for a 7-0 Canyon del Oro lead.

The Badgers came back with a 5 yard run by Sylas Espitia, but the extra point attempt was blocked, leaving the home squad down a point, at 7-6 with 9:48 to play in quarter number two.

Prescott got a gift in the final minute of the half, after the Badger defense had pinned Canyon del Oro deep in their own territory. The Dorados punter had trouble handing the snap and the Badgers dropped in inside the ten yard line. Sylas Espitia casually went into the end zone from one yard out to give Prescott its first lead of the night. Clay Gross added the PAT, and it was 13-7 with :34 left in the half.

The second half for the Badgers was filled with an inability to sustain a drive and penalty flags. Meanwhile, Canyon del Oro switched up their backfield by replacing starting QB Montana Neustadter with Jared Vazquez and adding Cory Bonstrom behind him.

A stalled drive led to a 35 yard field goal by David Alvarado to trim the Badger lead to 13-10 at the 7:16 mark.

Bonstrom made his presence felt on a blocked punt, setting up a 31 yard touchdown run by Bonstrom himself, giving the Dorados the lead back at 17-13 with 6:24 left on the third.

Canyon del Oro added a pair of fourth quarter field goals, one at 10:49 in the fourth to lead 20-13, and the game decider with just 1:31 to play.

The Badgers drop to (0-2) and will host Moon Valley next Friday at 7pm on Ken Lindley Field.
