The Prescott Badgers girls tennis team took the next step in the AIA Division II state playoffs, with a 5-3 win over a talented Thunderbird Chiefs team, on a windy afternoon at Prescott High School.
After spiltting the six singles matches, the Badgers took the first two in doubles competition. First it was #3 doubles team of Riley Smith and Ellie Fenderson, who beat Clarissa Dolezal and Keara Bolze 8-4 to put Prescott up 4-3. The #2 doubles team of Abby Stoecker and Sierra McDonald clinched the team victory with a an 8-4 win over Abby Weber and Quinne Talbot.
Abby Stoecker said, "We knew this was going to be a very tough match. They have a good team and we had to really work to get this win."
The win sends the Badgers to the semifinals and sets up a big challenge for Prescott as they will face #2 Catalina Foothills, on noon Friday, at the Paseo Raquet Center in Glendale.
Sterling Fetty said, "We knew that they were going to be challenging, but the girls put it all together beating a strong Thunderbird team." In regards to facing Catalina Foothills, Fetty said, "They are a loaded team. They have a great system down there and coaching staff, and it is going to be tough."
Prescott improves to (15-1), while Thunderbird ends their season at (14-2).
