The Prescott Badgers looked great in the first inning, but after that it was Lee Williams that ended up looking better, in a 14-6 win over the Badgers at Prescott High School.
The Badgers jumped on Lee Williams pitcher Ashley Sahawneh with five runs in the bottom of the first. The Volunteers got back into the game with three in the top of the second. Lee Williams scored another three in the top of the fourth to go up 6-5.
In the bottom of the fourth, Leigha Walker hit a double that broke her bat in half. She was left stranded at second
The knockout punch by Lee Williams came in the fifth as Ellie Bruno hit a grand slam to push the lead to 12-5. The Volunteers added two more to take a 14-5 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. Prescott loaded the bases but managed only one run, when Danner Couzens walked, scoring Sophia Fanchin.
Three Badgers had a pair of hits each in the contest, with Sophia Fanchin knocking in two runs with a single and a double. Makayla Reyes had a single and a double, and Leigha Walker single and a double.
Makayla Reyes pitched the first four innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out five. Hannah Irvine pitched in the fifth, before Fran Larson came in to finish the fifth, and sixth innings.
The Badgers (0-6) and (5-10) overall, will travel to face Lee Williams (1-5) and (7-12) once again on Thursday at 3:45pm.
Varsity Baseball
In a battle of the two top teams in the Grand Canyon Region, it was the home team that won the first of two meetings this week, as Lee Williams Volunteers beat the Prescott Badgers 10-4 in Kingman, Monday afternoon. The Volunteers dinged up Badger starter Ray Chairez with 10 runs, (8 earned), on 10 hits in 4.2 innings. Chairez struck out five, but issued the same number of walks. Luke Fredrick came in to finish the game off registering a strikeout.
Matt Bathauer kept the Badgers in check for most of the contest by striking out 14, while giving up four runs on on four hits. Prescott managed only four singles with Luke Fredrick picking up an RBI. The four Badger hits came from Ashton Hubbs, Jacob Police, and Ray Chairez, and Korey Schwartz.
The Badgers (5-1) in the Grand Canyon Region, and (8-8) overall, will get another shot at the Volunteers (6-0), and (11-5) on Thursday at home. Game time is 3pm.
