Badgers slow start costly in first home game of 2019


Playing their second game in as many nights, after more than a two week layoff, the Prescott Badgers struggled to get going in a 66-32 loss to the Estrella Foothills Wolves, in the Badger Dome last night.

The Badgers trailed from the start. Down 4-2 midway through the first quarter, Prescott saw the Wolves find the basket over and over, going on a 17-0 run that lasted for nearly four minutes. Jacob Carter hit a three pointer to end the drought with :35 left in the first quarter, but by that time the home team was trailing 21-5.

The Wolves started off with a pair of baskets to up the advantage to 26-5, before Jason Parent got hit his first basket with 6:33 on the second quarter clock to make it 26-7. The Badgers started to get some more shots to fall, cutting the deficit to 31-15, with 3:41 left in the half. Estrella Foothills responded with a 10-4 run to finish the quarter, leading by 22 at the half, 41-19.

In the third quarter, an exchange of three pointers by Estrella Foothills' Shaun Wahlstrom, followed by a Jason Parent three, made the score  44-24. Once again, the Badgers had little response as the Wolves closed out the quarter on a 9-2 run to lead 53-28.

The deficit reached 31 at 59-28, which resulted in a running clock for the remaining 5:27. Parent hit his second three of the game for the Badgers, the first points of the final quarter, with 1:47 remaining and a 59-31 score. Shaun Wahlstrom led all scorers with 19 points, while Jason Parent led the Badgers with 13.

Estrella Foothills improves to (11-6) and will play at Youngker on Tuesday, while Prescott (4-9) will host rival Bradshaw Mountain on Tuesday night at 7pm.
